The battle to save a community from a watery grave Fifty years have passed since a small agricultural community in Carmarthenshire won an epic battle to save their land from becoming a reservoir to supply water for Swansea. The S4C documentary Brwydr Llangyndeyrn (The Llangyndeyrn Battle) on Sunday, 20 October tells the story of how Cwm Gwendraeth Fach was saved in 1963 by meeting the families of the people who were at the heart of the battle.

Celebration of the Saving of Llangyndeyrn and the Gwendraeth Fach Valley

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the then Swansea Corporation developed proposals for a dam and reservoir to be built in the Gwendraeth Fach valley. The proposed reservoir would have then supplied water to the Swansea conurbation. The proposals involved the construction of a dam which would have resulted in the flooding of productive farmland, several farmhouses and a number of houses close to and within the village of Llangyndeyrn, and also upstream

Goodbye 2012 and look out 2013!

 Fifty years have now passed since the local community’s struggle to save the village and the Gwendraeth Fach valley from being drowned to create a reservoir. The initial celebrations have already started and have been both successful and enjoyable. Events will continue throughout this year culminating in October 2013. We are hoping that the series of celebrations will continue to be very successful and well supported by the local community
